Florida Auto Insurance Tips for Hurricane Season | Golf Carts vs. Low Speed Vehicles Explained

June 20, 2025

As we enter the heart of hurricane season, it’s the perfect time to revisit a topic that impacts nearly every household in our community—auto insurance. At HH Insurance, we believe that understanding your coverage is key to protecting what matters most. In this month’s newsletter, we dive into three critical areas: auto insurance essentials, hurricane-related vehicle coverage, and the differences between golf carts and low-speed vehicles (LSVs).

The Importance of Auto Insurance in Florida

Having the right auto insurance isn’t just a legal requirement—it’s a crucial safeguard for your family and your financial wellbeing. For Florida residents, where storms and flooding are seasonal realities, comprehensive auto coverage is especially important.

If you’re currently insured with HH Insurance for your home, but not your auto, you might be missing out on a seamless experience that includes:

  • A dedicated service team that knows your full insurance picture
  • Streamlined communication through a single agency
  • Coordinated policy renewal dates

Hurricane Season & Auto Insurance: What’s Covered?

One of the most common questions we receive this time of year is:

“If my car floods during a hurricane while it’s parked in my garage, is it covered by flood or auto insurance?”

The answer: your auto insurance covers it, but only if you have physical damage coverage—also known as comprehensive coverage. Flood insurance for your home does not cover your vehicle, even if it’s in the garage.

Physical damage coverage also protects against:

  • Falling trees or debris
  • Theft and vandalism
  • Fire
  • Animal collisions

In Florida, this coverage is more than just optional—it’s essential.

Golf Carts vs. Low-Speed Vehicles: Know the Difference

Florida’s sunny neighborhoods often include golf carts and LSVs, but many owners don’t realize the important insurance distinctions between them.

Golf Carts:

  • Not street-legal on public roads (unless in a designated golf cart community)
  • Typically, not covered by homeowners insurance
  • Require a separate golf cart policy
  • Annual premiums: $100–$250

Low-Speed Vehicles (LSVs):

  • Street-legal on roads with speed limits of 35 mph or less
  • Must be registered and insured like a car
  • Require Personal Injury Protection (PIP) and other standard auto coverages
  • Annual premiums: $250–$1,000+

If you’ve upgraded your golf cart to be street-legal, don’t overlook the need to insure it as a Low Speed Vehicle. And if your golf cart is uninsured, now is the time to protect it properly.
